How Much Does a Wedding in Douro Valley Cost?

Almost every couple asks this question early in the planning process. And honestly, they should.

One of the hardest parts of planning a destination wedding abroad is understanding what things actually cost in real life — not in a brochure, not in an aspirational blog post, but in practice. After more than 15 years planning weddings in the Douro Valley and across Portugal, I have worked with couples at very different budgets and with very different priorities. This is what I tell them.

Venue — €0 to €40,000+

The venue is usually the most significant cost — and also the most misunderstood one.

Some quintas charge an exclusivity fee that includes accommodation for all your guests. Others charge exclusivity without accommodation. Some include catering, furniture and coordination within their pricing. Others require almost everything to be brought in separately.

This is why comparing venues on price alone rarely makes sense. A venue that looks more expensive at first glance may actually include far more — and end up offering better value overall. Understanding exactly what is and is not included is one of the first things we work through together.

Catering — €45 to €300 per person

Catering varies widely depending on the style of the celebration and the venue itself.

A relaxed pre-wedding gathering or poolside dinner can start around €45 per person. A full wedding dinner with cocktail hour and open bar typically falls between €150 and €250 per guest. Some venues include catering within their overall package — which simplifies things considerably. Others work with external caterers, giving more flexibility but also more to coordinate.

For 80 to 100 guests, the wedding day catering alone often represents an investment of €15,000 to €25,000.

Photography and videography — €2,500 to €6,500

Photography is almost always the investment couples value most afterwards.

In a place like the Douro — where so much of the experience is tied to the landscape, the light and the people gathered around you — having someone truly capable of documenting those moments makes an enormous difference. A strong wedding photographer typically starts around €2,500. Videography begins around €3,000.

Years later, these are the images and films couples return to most.

Flowers and décor — €500 to €30,000+

One thing many couples realise once they visit the Douro is that the landscape already gives you so much.

The vineyards, the river, the warm stone and the evening light create a setting that rarely needs excessive decoration to feel beautiful. Many couples choose to invest around €5,000 in flowers and thoughtful accents — enough to add intention without competing with what is already there. Those who want larger installations, custom furniture or full styling transformations can invest considerably more.

The right approach is not necessarily spending more. It is understanding where design will actually make a difference.

Music — €1,500 to €4,500

Music shapes the energy of the day more than most people expect.

A DJ covering all the key moments — ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner and dancing — typically starts around €1,500. A live band brings a different energy and generally begins around €4,000. Many couples choose a combination: live music for the ceremony and cocktail hour, a DJ for the reception. It often creates a beautiful balance between atmosphere and budget.

Wedding planner — €1,800 to €5,000

At MM Weddings, our fees vary depending on the level of support each couple needs — from full wedding planning to day-of coordination or intimate elopement experiences.

We intentionally keep our calendar small each year. Not because we cannot take on more, but because we choose not to. Every couple who works with us deserves close attention, honest communication and real availability — not a busy agency that fits them between ten other weddings.

So, what is the total?

For a wedding with 80 to 100 guests in the Douro Valley, most celebrations realistically fall somewhere between €30,000 and €80,000 — depending on the venue, accommodation, catering structure and overall styling.

Smaller weddings and elopements can be created with more modest budgets, often starting around €5,000 depending on the experience you have in mind.

What matters most is not reaching a specific number. It is understanding what feels important to you as a couple, and building the day around those priorities.

Planning with clarity from the beginning

At MM Weddings, we guide couples through the budgeting process from the very first conversation — helping them understand what is truly included at each venue, where it makes sense to invest more, and where simpler choices often create a better experience overall.

Planning a wedding in another country can feel overwhelming at first. It does not have to feel complicated.
