Portuguese Wines You Need to Know Before Your Wedding Day

Ok, let’s talk about wine. Because if you’re planning a wedding in Portugal and you’re not thinking about wine, we need to have a serious conversation.

Portugal has some of the best wines in the world — and most of your guests have never tried them. That first sip at the welcome dinner? That’s a moment. Don’t waste it on something generic.

Here’s what I’d put on the table. And yes, these are my actual favourites.

Reds — start here

The Douro is one of the oldest wine regions in the world and the reds are bold, complex and deeply Portuguese. Love many of them. Pacheca wines are one of my favorites. My personal go-to is from Alentejo Guarda Rios Signature – it holds memories so i think it tastes better. It’s the kind of wine that makes people stop mid-conversation to ask what they’re drinking. That’s exactly what you want at a wedding dinner. But there are so many options. Good ones and the good part of it all is that – the goos wine is cheap!

White wine from the Douro — yes, really

Most people don’t think about white Douro wines, but they should. The Corvo Branco Maduro is one of my personal favourite — and before you judge me, yes, I discovered it at Mercadona and I have zero shame about that. It’s mature, complex, and genuinely delicious. Your guests will never guess where it came from. I am also a fun os sweet wines so you know! So Grandjo is also on my list.

Syrah from Quinta do Outeiro — the conversation starter

This one is special. The Syrah from Quinta do Outeiro is elegant, distinctive and not what most people expect from a Portuguese wine. It always gets comments. If you want something that feels a little unexpected on the table, this is it.

Vinho Verde for a wedding in Portugal — for the welcome dinner

Light, slightly sparkling, refreshing. Guests who have never tried it fall in love immediately. It’s the kind of wine that makes people relax and smile before they’ve even sat down. Look for Anselmo Mendes if you want something a step above the usual.

Port wine — the ending that nobody forgets

My absolute favourite is the Six Grapes from Graham’s — it’s rich, balanced and works beautifully at the end of a long dinner. And if you want a rosé Port for a lighter moment, Graham’s rosé is equally good. If you skip Port at a wedding in Portugal I will personally be offended. Get Port Tonic as one of you personal cocktails. Guests will love it!

Wine here isn’t just what you drink. It’s part of how the evening unfolds — slowly, with good food, good company, and no rush. If you’re planning a wedding in Portugal and want help putting together a menu and wine list that feels genuinely local, that’s exactly the kind of thing we love doing.
