Couples drawn to Coimbra tend to want something a little different from the vineyard terraces of the Douro. Think riverside quintas just outside the city where the Mondego slows down, restored manor houses and old convents converted into small boutique hotels, and gardens like the Jardim Botânico, planted in the 18th century and still shaded by trees older than most countries. For a ceremony with real drama, some couples ask about access to a courtyard near the old university itself, though that takes advance planning and the right permits.
What we love most about weddings here is the scale. Coimbra rewards an intimate, unhurried celebration over a huge production, which is part of why it pairs so naturally with the kind of small, meaningful weddings we plan often, close friends and family gathered somewhere that feels personal rather than staged.
Planning the Practical Side of a Coimbra Wedding
Logistically, Coimbra is an easy add to a Portugal trip. It sits about an hour from Porto and just under two hours from Lisbon by train, which makes it simple for guests flying into either city. Spring, from April through June, and early autumn tend to be the most comfortable months, both for weather and for avoiding the university’s exam periods, when the city gets louder and rooms fill up fast. Accommodation here is smaller and more boutique than in Porto or Lisbon, so booking early matters more than it does elsewhere.
