There’s a moment that happens at almost every Algarve wedding I’ve worked on, right around sunset, when the golden light hits the limestone cliffs and every guest reaches for their phone at the same time. It’s not staged, it just happens. If you’re picturing a wedding day with that kind of light, salt air, and a sea view you can barely believe is real, the Algarve deserves a serious look.
Why Couples Choose the Algarve
Most of my clients already know the Douro Valley or Porto by the time they reach out, but a growing number are asking about the south coast instead, especially couples coming from warmer climates who want something that feels closer to home while still being unmistakably Portuguese. The Algarve gives you nearly 300 days of sunshine a year, dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and a stretch of coastline that ranges from wild and quiet in the west to lively and social in the east, so there’s genuinely a version of this region for a candlelit dinner for twelve or a three day celebration for a hundred and fifty guests.
It also solves a real logistical problem for a lot of our couples living in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Direct or one stop flights into Faro are easier than most people expect, and the climate on arrival doesn’t feel like a shock the way a Northern European wedding sometimes does.
Where to Get Married in the Algarve
Lagos and the cliffs around Ponta da Piedade are where most people picture an Algarve wedding first, and for good reason, the rock formations there do a lot of the decorating for you. Carvoeiro offers a similar drama on a smaller, more private scale. If your guest list is large and you want resort level infrastructure without giving up the sea view, the Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago area around Almancil has venues built for exactly that. And for couples who want something wilder and further from the crowds, Sagres and the west coast near the Costa Vicentina give you cliffs that feel closer to the edge of the world than a postcard.

Timing and Logistics for an Algarve Wedding
Late May through June and September through mid October are our favorite windows for an Algarve wedding. You still get warm, reliable weather without the peak July and August crowds and prices, and the light in early autumn along that coastline is honestly some of the best we’ve seen anywhere in Portugal. Wind is the one variable worth planning around, cliffside ceremony sites can get breezy in the afternoon, so we usually build that into the hair, styling, and audio setup rather than fighting it.
